If you’ve ever heard me talk about any of my births, you probably heard me talk about the food I ate afterwards. I generally don’t participate in things unless there is the promise of good food along the way, and that doesn’t stop with delivering babies.

After my oldest was born, we were home within a few hours. I grabbed a quick snack and fell asleep with my new beauty, while my husband spent the hours watching cooking shows. When I woke up he had the most delicious tomato soup that ever graced this earth, and a crusty bread with melted fontina cheese for me to dip in the soup. I’ve never loved someone like I loved my husband after that meal.

A short 17 months later when we were arriving home with our next daughter, I played the whole “I’m going to take a nap and maybe eat something when I wake up” card, hoping he knew what that really meant. Because the man loves me, I woke to my favorite curried vegetables and rice. Probably any Indian grandmother would not recognize it as a real curry dish given that it was made with heavy cream and store bought curry, but damn if it wasn’t delicious.

We blinked our eyes a couple of times and we were on our way home with our next baby. Given that she was our third in three years we didn’t have time for making scrumptious victory meals, so we swung by the local pizza place and ordered a cheese calzone. I’ll never forget sitting down in the recliner with the baby ready to nurse, my husband gave me the calzone and went to get plates and napkins and I ate that calzone so fast that it was gone by the time he got back. I told him the dog ate it.

I look back on my three “victory meals” with almost as much fondness as I have for the births of my three girls. My top ten list includes all of the delicious foods I indulged in during the first few days after my babies were born.

It’s hard work, having a baby, and you deserve a delicious meal for all of your effort. What do you plan/ did you have for your first meal after baby?

I imagine its like eating after running a marathon. The body has worked so hard and really deserves the food, and it makes the food taste so much better.
